Daily Drawing 799 – 800AD Hawaii

The first settlers arrived in Hawaii to find the islands protected by the Mo’o.

I’ve stepped back in time a little from where I left off before Christmas, back to the beginning of the 9th Century, when the first settlers arrived on the Hawaiian islands.

Early Hawaiian legends speak of dragons, and they seem to be called Mo’o…although that also seems to refer to geckos. Hawaiian dragons were shapeshifters, both good and bad, and mostly aquatic. Many of the bodies of water are still believed to be protected by a Mo’o.

I think that’s mostly correct. It was a tough drawing session tonight. I had to deal with a cranky baby that liked to kick my sketchbook when I wasn’t paying attention to him. 🙂
