It was my brother’s 40th birthday this year, I figured I’d try something different for him. Thanks to my friend Doug, I was able to get a hold of an old guitar…then the question was what should I do with it?
Around the same time I was starting the guitar I found a website (www.terribleyelloweyes.com) full of tributes to Maurice Sendak’s book “Where the Wild Things Are”. The website inspired me to do a Wild Thing theme for the design. I drew a quick sketch in my sketchbook, then superimposed it on top of a picture of the guitar.
I like idea, but I still didn’t know what I was going to do with the whole face of the guitar. I wanted to keep the design fairly loose and sketchy so I thought I would add the monster, and figure out the rest as I went.
I was making things up as I went, looking for inspiration within the pages of the book. I liked the idea of the characters dancing to the music…
Finally I just needed something to bridge the space between the two characters…what better than Max’s boat.
The finished drawing…all thanks to a black and a white SHARPIE!
