Sadly, just days before Christmas 2013 my mom passed away. She was my biggest supporter, and her ‘lengthy illness’ was one of the reasons I started my daily dragons. Every dragon drawing would get emailed to the digital photo frame beside my mom’s bed. Well, almost every dragon. I sent them in batches at the end of the week, so I’m sure many were missed. But, if I went too long without updating the drawings, I would get a text from my sister passing along a snarky reminder from ma.
My mom was an amazing woman, and it saddens me that my son will not get to know the wonderful woman that she was. He did however bring her a few happy moments in mom’s final days, I will be sure to tell him all about that when he’s older.
After 61 years of marriage, my mom’s passing brought out a strength in my dad we never saw growing up. My sister captured it beautifully in this poem that was dedicated to him and read at the memorial.
2013 was a tough year. The birth of my son was the obvious high point, but there were many lows and I can’t say I’m sad to see it end. Here’s hoping that 2014 brings better things to everyone.
